Heavy Snow Takes Toll On Already Burdened Farmers

The snows of 2011 are taking their toll on an already overburdened profession. Eleven dairy barns have collapsed under the weight of successive storms. At least a dozen cows have died and hundreds have been trapped under caved-in roofs and timbers.

Plan looks to boost agricultural sector

Agriculture employs an estimated one in six people in Vermont. On Wednesday a statewide economic development organization  released a strategic plan that looks to strengthen this critical component of Vermont’s economy.

Plan seeks to preserve Vt.'s open landscape

At a summit in Montpelier this past Friday, members of the Vermont Council on Rural Development’s Working Landscape Partnership laid out a plan that they hope will preserve and bolster the state’s agricultural and forestry economy. The more than 300 people gathered at the Future of Vermont’s Working Landscape summit included planners, legislators and governor-elect Peter Shumlin. Among the faces were many from Addison County who are interested in sustaining the area’s agricultural way of life and the culture surrounding it.

Cabot accused of polluting farms with wastewater

Public advocacy groups took aim at a sacred Vermont institution Wednesday, accusing cheese-maker Cabot Creamery of polluting local farms with wastewater full of industrial chemicals. Members of the groups Toxics Action Center and Whey To Go, said Cabot Creamery's practice of spraying local fields with water used to clean their equipment is not in tune with Vermont's image as a green state. Cabot Creamery immediately denied any wrongdoing.
