VPR receives Murrow Award

The Rutland Herald reports that "Vermont Public Radio has been honored with a 2008 national Edward R. Murrow Award for excellence in broadcast journalism" under "the category of Continuing Coverage for its comprehensive reporting on climate change in 2007." Indeed, "thirteen representative stories were chosen for the entry out of more than 50 stories, interviews, programs and commentaries, including the week-long series, 'The Changing Climate.' They included initiatives in the Vermont Legislature, coverage of the greenhouse gas emissions trial, a Vermont Edition program on carbon offsets, reports on the possible effects of climate change on Vermont's ski and maple industries, an interview with author Bill McKibben and even a story on 'Climate Change, the Musical.'"

Vt. arts get $147K in funds

The Rutland Herald reports that the Vermont Arts Council has awarded a total of $147,000 over the next three years to seven arts organizations including the Pentangle Council on the Arts in Woodstock, the Vermont Arts Exchange in Bennington, the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts in Burlington, River Arts of Morrisville, the Rockingham Arts and Museum Project in Bellows Falls, Burlington City Arts in Burlington, and VSA Arts of Vermont, a statewide agency. The grants are intended to support these organizations' efforts in strengthening long-term partnerships with their communities." Notably, "the Vermont Arts Council believes investing in the arts returns economic dividends and increases community involvement and pride.

Group to transform Starksboro building into a Vermont music archive

The Addison County Independent reports that the Big Heavy World Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving and promoting Vermont-made music, plans to revitalize the site of a former creamery in Starksboro by building a library that houses Vermont music of all types. Recently, Saputo, a Montreal-based dairy company, donated the Green Mountain Cold Springs Creamery property to the Foundation. The Foundation plans to build a modern facility on the property including "a climate-controlled archive for the organization’s library of more than 3,000 recordings." Construction may begin as early as 2009 and will likely take "several years" to complete.

Shelburne Museum houses new Kimble exhibit

Vermont Public Radio reports that Shelburne Museum has a new exhibit that "celebrat[es] the iconic works of contemporary folk artist Warren Kimble." The exhibit includes "100 pieces of Kimble's art" including "landscapes, barns, domestic and wild animal paintings"; "some of his lesser known works, including early pieces from his time as a professor at Castleton State College"; and "newer and darker pieces, inspired by the war in Iraq. Kimble said that "even though he's achieved a level of critical and financial success any artist would envy, he's feeling a little nervous about how this exhibit in Shelburne will be received."

Former home of Robert Frost now a museum

Vermont Public Radio reports that Robert Frost's home on Route 7a in Shatsuby has been turned into a museum. When Frost purchased the home, he wrote that he intended "to plant a new Garden of Eden with a thousand Apple trees -- of the Unforbidden variety." The group of volunteers that turned the house into the museum "hope to restore Frost's ‘Garden of Eden.'" Notably, "Frost wrote his best known poem at this home."
