The Lake Between: Native American Encampment

Lake Champlain Maritime Museum (LCMM), Vergennes
LCMM will partner with Abenaki and Iroquois tribal groups to host a "living history" weekend of 17th century indigenous crafts, living skills, demonstrations, and cultural ceremony, including French re-enactors, arquebus demonstrations, and launchings of the 1609-era birch bark canoes. The weekend will include a craft show of Abenaki and Iroquois artisans.

To celebrate the quadricentennial of Samuel de Champlain's exploration of Lake Champlain, Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont will host an international interdisciplinary symposium July 2 -5, 2009. Local, regional and international specialists on all areas of the 17th century establishment of "New France" in various disciplines are invited to participate in the event. "When the French Were Here" focuses on Samuel de Champlain, his life and "New France" during Champlain's exploration of the New World. The multi-day event will include presentations on navigation and military history of Lake Champlain, early cartographic records of the region, and on-going archeolgoical investigations of Lake Champlain, as well as special events of off-site field trips.
When This Land Was Called New France - Historic Tour

Come and discover the beautiful history of this region – from Quebec City to the valley of Lake Champlain – when it was called New France (1608-1759). Journey in time from Samuel de Champlain's exploration of the lake that would bear his name, and the first contacts between Native Americans and Europeans, to the first settlements and forts along the lake's shores, and finally the military actions of the French and Indian War. The land and water journey will take you from Quebec City to the historic Richelieu River and the Lake Champlain valley in Vermont and New York State. In Quebec City, you will attend the 250th Anniverisary reenactment of the Battle of Quebec, with the participation of more than 1,000 reenactors. In the Lake Champlain valley, you will experience 18th-century French food and the way French settlers dressed, farmed and lived there. You will learn why Lake Champlain was such a strategic place at the time of New France. This 6-day tour is organized in partnership with the History Channel and Ipswich Tours. It includes: an on-board historian guide, evening presentations by experts, a cruise on Lake Champlain, private tours at forts such as Fort Chambly and Fort Ticonderoga, lodging in some historic inns in the Champlain Islands and Middlebury, and more.

The 3-mile walk winds around St Johnsbury and passes by the Northeast Kingdom Youth Services Elm Street Shelter for homeless youth.There are raffles, entertainment and a full barbeque after the walk. All proceeds benefit the Elm Street Shelter for Homeless Youth.
