Vermont schools miss budget goal

Vermont schools agreed to cut only one-fifth of the sum that they were asked to trim under a state budget austerity measure, preliminary statewide numbers suggest. Vermont Education Department numbers from about 90 percent of school systems showed Thursday that savings would come nowhere close to the $23 million in reductions sought under the Challenges for Change law.
