Homelessness on the rise

According to the Bennington Banner, the Bennington Coalition for the Homeless, which operates a shelter and provides transitional housing, reports that Bennington County's homeless population has increased for a second year in a row.  Indeed a January survey shows there are 265 homeless people in Bennington versus 147 in 2005.  The Coalition's executive director suggests that the rise may be attributed to a lack of affordable housing and heating costs.  The director also noted that shelter space is lacking and that homeless may be on the rise in other Vermont counties as well.
